I was planning on a vacation to the beautiful city of Amsterdam and began to look into some of their tours. I came across city bike tours and bike rentals, which sounded quite fun to me except for the fact that it was beginning of winter. I thought to myself, sounds a bit too adventurous to ride around snow.
Well, I ended up visiting Amsterdam end of December and my bike assumption was left on the side of the road next to the bike parking lot. Yes, bike parking lot, if I didn’t see it I wouldn’t of believed it. I wasn’t in the city 5 mins and I got a taste that Amsterdam was not kidding about their method of transportation.
Bike lanes, bike riders and families biking made me think about how this city caters to bikers – and I might add – a healthy looking community. How come our great cities on the east coast haven’t gotten up to speed on this? I can only imagine if we all used our bikes to work. I do love bikes with cute baskets, but at the same time yellow cabbies and the rest of the NYC rush hour drivers come to mind.
One can only hope, but my barrette off to those cities that are conscious on their footprint!
